4. A Very Vintage Haul...

This month's eBay antics and charity shop trawling.

I started this blog with the intention of writing about both running and all things vintage, but as my fiancé (it’s still weird calling him that…) pointed out at the weekend, I’ve done very little running in the last few weeks. Things have been crazy and I’ve been kind of lazy.

Oh, hey there :)

I’ve spent a lot of time watching YouTube; in particular Rachel MaksyI came across her channel, The Pinup Companion while searching for vintage inspiration and now I am hooked! I think I may have watched ALL of her videos. She has such an eclectic and engaging mix of videos on making vintage accessible and how to thrift and charity shop your way to a vintage inspired wardrobe among other things. This post is really about how I have implemented some of this and how the purchases I have made recently fit into my collection. I’ve bought things from eBay, charity shops, Primark and a charity shop specialising in vintage (dream come true) over the last few weeks… So let’s dive right in:

Retro – Newcastle

You might recognise some of these from my Instagram… I featured the buckle  on the orange bag a couple of weeks ago, same with the Billy Joel record, prior to seeing him last week. I’m always looking to expand my record collection and just love flicking through all the old records, there are always so may jazz records or waltz and polka records. These are slowly making their way into my collection and with my recent dabble with Lindy Hop, I can put them to good use!

Barnardo’s and Banardo's Vintage – Cheadle

There are two Banardo's on the high street in Cheadle: one is a specialist vintage shop and the other just your standard charity shop. I stubbled upon the former and was a little disappointed, until I spotted a stool that would go perfectly with my dressing table. Arms laden with a stool and a bag for my sister, I was on the way out when one of the volunteers, seeing my vintage-y attire, gave me directions to the vintage shop at the top of the road!!!

A what a treasure trove it was. There was something for everyone; my sister who hate being dragged round vintage shops by me, had a great time when she spotted the vintage cameras corner. Things got even better when she found one with film still in it. Somehow I managed to reign it in and only purchase 3 items, well 4 technically, but you have to buy shoes in twos.

eBay

  • High waisted, grey woolen trousers -  These were my little designer splurge, the first of the Jaeger items I bought this month. I was having at wee google, as it's not a brand I was familiar with, and found out that they are still going and that all their clothes are made with natural fibers. I quite likes this. The trousers are a lovely soft wool, fit like a dream and are great for wearing to work.

  • 1940s White Land-girl Shirt –  I love this shirt!! I fits really well and looks amazing paired with my blue wool pencil skirt. I wore it last week when I had an event to go to after work. Big mistake… I am the world’s clumsiest person and managed to spill coffee down the front of it whilst at work. Luckily I had my weekend bag in the car and shirt I could pull on. There is a lack of picture because it's still coffee stained (My flat didn't come with a washing machine and I haven't got round to purchasing one yet).
  • 1940s Pink and Yellow Floral Dress with Wrap Top - This is my go to style for dresses. What I love about them is the length, most vintage dresses have a longer hemline. Which is great if you are a tall person such as myself, they fall at the perfect midi/knee length. It's made a million times better by the discovery of pockets.

I love, love, love this! The flowers, the fit. If I could live in one dress for the rest of the summer, it would be this one!
  • Brown Wool Suit (the highlight of my week!) –  I cannot wait to receive this parcel in the post. It will be all over my Instagram when it comes. I have wanted a retro suit as long as I have been wearing vintage and taking inspiration from stars in programmes like Mad Men, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Call the Midwife. The suit that I bought certainly wasn't the most expensive one on there. In fact I had been watching it for a while, when the price came down and then I was all over it. My wardrobe has reached a pinnacle. Where could I possibly go from here?!

Charity Shops - Northfield high street

Somewhere cheap and cheerful, that's where. I have lots of midi skirts, in a range of colours (mostly modern clothing – Topshop and H&M or other charity shop finds) and so I was on the hunt for colours to go with these. Or for some funky detailing, like the peter pan collar on the orange jumper (I wore this outfit to work today - knitted jumper on the hottest day of the year... Clearly I didn't learn my lesson at the weekend). I’m also on the hunt for orange or green items that compliment my red hair. The red orange felt coat, pictured above (with the grey, high waisted trousers) is the most amazing feeling thing. June isn't really the month to be buying a fluffy coat, but I couldn't pass up this beauty.

Primark – Manchester

  •  Striped Rolling Stones cropped T-shirt – This isn't really vintage item, but vintage inspired. I wore this to the Billy Joel concert, styled it up with my repro wide leg dungarees, Doc Marten boots, and red belt. Little did I know he was going to play a Rolling Stones song! It must have been fate.

So I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I have enjoyed writing it, and a little more than my bank account has this month. I’ve been in some interesting places this month, with the opportunity to shop. Next month’s going to be all running; with two Rat Race events and several family visits, so stay tuned to hear how I get on with Man vs Coast and Man vs. Lakes in July, see if I survive my parent’s meeting the in-laws, and in between all of this I will hopefully make some wedding planning progress.

Comments and feedback are welcomed, I’m still new to this… So leave them below.

J xoxo
